Concreting in Melbourne: paths, slabs, driveways and repairs

Concreting can cover a small path repair, a new shed slab or an entire driveway. A concreter may be appropriate for planned concrete placement and finishing, but the scope and any permits, engineering and excavation need to be clarified before work begins. Not every concrete job can be started or safely completed on the same day.

01

When is a concreter the right trade?

Examples include repairing a damaged concrete path, constructing a small non-structural pad where permitted, resurfacing a driveway or arranging a new slab. For a structural slab or substantial building work, ask about engineering, permits, qualified building practitioners and the work's regulatory classification. A quote from a concreter does not replace engineering advice.

02

What to include in the quote request

Record the location, approximate area and dimensions, existing surface, expected vehicle or foot traffic, access for a concrete truck and any drainage issues. Ask whether excavation, spoil disposal, sub-base compaction, reinforcement, formwork, concrete specification, joints, finishing and cleanup are included.

03

Why same-day concreting needs qualification

A small site assessment or quote may be arranged quickly. Pouring concrete requires preparation, suitable weather and curing time, so advertising 'same-day driveway installation' as a normal service would mislead customers. Ask when the area can safely support foot or vehicle traffic according to the product, site conditions and contractor's guidance.

04

Check approvals and safety

Changing levels, drainage, crossovers, structures or access to a public footpath may need relevant council permits or approvals. Clarify service-location checks before excavation and who is responsible for site safety and drainage. Confirm trade credentials or building registration where applicable.

05

Example of a useful job post

“Quote needed for a damaged concrete side path in Melbourne, roughly 6 metres long by 1 metre wide. Existing slab has cracks and uneven sections. Please assess removal, sub-base, drainage, finish, spoil disposal, curing and whether permits are needed. Access through a side gate; photos available.”

Before booking concreter work
